Here are some of the most common inquiries;
Where are all your finished photos/online portfolio?
Yes my online presence is not top tier- let me put it this way, while I am open about the high reactivity of my own pets, many folks prefer to keep the behaviours of their companions, private. Understandably so. Secondly, While sticking to the types of dogs who enjoy their regular grooming session; may be safer, and easier, and a path advised to me by all those dear to me- I'm here for the REST of the animals. The seniors, the 1st timers, the movers, groovers & shakers, the nippers, the nervous, the nasty Nellie's, and the neglected. When I am in the zone, the last thing on my mind upon completion is "ok Stay, while I grab my phone!" I will be making an effort to gather more photos of my clients, but it is far from a priority.
To muzzle or not to muzzle?
If deemed appropriate, or if your dog has bit to a degree of drawing blood in the past, I would request a muzzle. But ensuring one that has adequate room to pant, and is the basket design, made from hard material. I may offer my recommendations if needed. I often find simple cones can be suprisingly effective, while many muzzles offer no real protection when put to the test.
If you think you need a muzzle, but do not know how to begin, or want some guidance in introducing your dog to wearing a muzzle, I am always happy to help get the ball rolling. Highly reccommended miasmuzzles.com
Cats are a bit different. I personally do not jump on the bubble method, and have great success handling without one. Restricting a cats freedom to bite, is not always a necessity for me,
I will always prioritize safety above all else, that means mine, yours, and the furry client in question.
What if my pet bites or scratches you?!
I've been bit, nipped and scratched many times over the years. I have a multitude of scars to prove it, every failed prevention, has been a valuable lesson learned, and I have learned alot.
-What causes which types of behaviours,
-learning triggers, paying close attention to subtle changes in body language,
-the difference of warnings, a self preservation reaction, fear aggression, dominance and territorial behaviours,
Animale can speak the loudest with their teeth, and it's crucial to understand where, when, and why. I do wear protective hand and arm gear when needed, muzzles when needed... if your animal is extremely aggressive, be prepared for little grooming to take place the first session. If sedation is the only other option you have, I am prepared to visit your pet as often as possible, to build some trust WITHOUT gauging your wallet in the process!
If you have a biter, and can't help but worry for my safety, I would ask for some reasonable distance, as nervous energy never helps the situation.
For your peace of mind, a form signed, releasing you of any liability should I become injured at your home or by your pet, can be provided upon request.
Can I be in the room or watch?
ABSOLUTELY! Whether that means up close to observe, or participation in holding, the potential benefits depend entirely on the individual. While some pets take much comfort in mom or dad in sight, the reverse effect may occur. In short, entirely a case-by-case basis. If you prefer to stick nearby, YOUR ability to remain confident and calm is vital to the success of the outcome.
What to expect?
The initial meet and greet for pets with behavioural challenges, always varies with goals, expectations, and outcomes. The more details, history and information I can gather prior to arrival, the better!
While most 1st appointments hover between the 60-90 minute mark, and full service grooms averaging 2 - 3 hours, my booking strategy allows always for no-rush appointments, and flexibility. Not looking to host? Drop-off/ pick up available for dogs and cats, however cats would be crated upon completion until pick-up.
When working with cats, the first development of stress panting, means all work stops. End of story. The patient comes above perfection!
If I feel a dog has reached his limits for the day, then the call for a 15 minute break, or to end the appointment entirely will be made.
In severe cases, We will always take the small wins, baby steps lead to healthy progress.
