Here are some of the most common inquiries;
To muzzle or not to muzzle?
If deemed appropriate, or if your dog has bit to a degree of drawing blood in the past for reasons beyond serious self defense, I would request a muzzle. But ensuring one that has adequate room to pant, and is comfortable, is key. I often find simple cones can be suprisingly effective.
If you think you need a muzzle, but do not know how to begin, or want some guidance in introducing your dog to wearing a muzzle, I am always happy to help get the ball rolling.
Cats are a bit different. I personally do not support the bubble method, and have great success handling without one. Restricting a cats freedom to bite, is not a necessity for me.
What if my pet bites or scratches you?!
I've been bit, nipped and scratched many times over the years. I have a multitude of scars to prove it, every failed prevention, has been a valuable lesson learned, and I have learned alot.
-What causes which types of behaviours,
-learning triggers, paying close attention to subtle changes in body language,
-the difference of warnings, a self preservation reaction, fear aggression, dominance and territorial behaviours,
Animale can speak the loudest with their teeth, and it's crucial to understand where, when, and why. I do wear protective hand and arm gear when needed, muzzles when needed... if your animal is extremely aggressive, be prepared for little grooming to take place the first session. If sedation is the only other option you have, I am prepared to visit your pet as often as possible, to build some trust WITHOUT gauging your wallet in the process!
If you have a biter, and can't help but worry for my safety, I would ask for some reasonable distance, as nervous energy never helps the situation.
For your peace of mind, a form signed, releasing you of any liability should I become injured at your home or by your pet, can be provided upon request.
Can I be in the room or watch?
ABSOLUTELY! whenever the situation benefits, I encourage owner assisted holds. I work alone, this limits the number of strangers that can overwhelm a nervous animal, and allows for no-rush working. Whenever the option comes up, I am happy to get owners involved!
Lg, or Xlg dog, who's not a fan of grooming, and you'd prefer not to be in the middle? No problem. I have an on-demand human anchor assistant that joins me when the table is too small, or unsafe, but the dog may be to much for me to maintain safe control in handling.
Lee, my husband, is also my on-call partner in petcare.. - this gentle giant, with football shoulders and the calmest of energy, has proven to be the perfect pair of second hands when needed.
What to expect?
All I need from YOU, is a modest amount of space in your home. Kitchens and living rooms usually work great! Ever appointment, down to the details of how I enter the home and greet your pet, are entirely decided in advance, based on your pets temperment, tolerance, and behaviour.
The time frame if each appointment also varies, on the services, (nails only, to a full service groom) on top of how your pet reacts to handling and grooming, an appointment could take anywhere from 15 minutes, to beyond 2 hours!
I am usually booking 4-6 weeks in advance, but do reserve a two hour window, every week- for if a pet could not be completed during the first appointment, due to extreme behaviours. (This way you're not waiting a month with a partial job done!) This is often for feral or severely reactive cats, if they develop stress panting, all work stops. And If I feel a dog has reached his limits for the day, then completion of the service will be finished the following week.
And yes, if we don't complete the goal for the appointment, the cost will be adjusted, and the follow up appointment will reflect this as well. Safety comes first!
In severe cases, such as neglect, abuse, or trauma and injury, the goal may just be to get one paw trimmed, or to just handle the paws while keeping your dog in a calm, submissive state. Small wins, lead to healthy progress.
